TM/CAM in the USA

Organisations and Resources

The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM)

NCCAM is the US Federal Government's lead agency for scientific research on complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). The organization is 1 of the 27 institutes and centers that make up the National Institutes of Health (NIH) within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The mission of NCCAM is to:

•Explore complementary and alternative healing practices in the context of rigorous science.

•Train complementary and alternative medicine researchers.

•Disseminate authoritative information to the public and professionals.

CAM on PubMed

NCCAM and the National Library of Medicine (NLM) have partnered to create CAM on PubMed, a subset of NLM's PubMed. PubMed provides access to citations from the MEDLINE database and additional life science journals. It also includes links to many full-text articles at journal Web sites and other related Web resources.

Bastyr University

Bastyr University, located north of Seattle, Washington, is one of the world's leading academic centers for advancing knowledge in the natural health sciences. See particularly bookstore and HIV/AIDS research: Alternative Medical Care Outcomes in AIDS (AMCOA).

Surveys

Biannual Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) Survey of Hospitals

The 3rd Biannual Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) Survey of Hospitals from the American Hospital Association/Health Forum found that the percentage of hospitals with at least some CAM services jumped to 37.4% from 26.5% in 2005. This movement is up from 7.7% in 1999, the first year the AHA included a question on CAM in one of its surveys.

Hospitals across the USA are responding to patient demand and integrating complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) services with the conventional services they normally provide.

"CAM is not based solely on traditional western allopathic medical teachings, and can include acupuncture, chiropractic, homeopathy, diet and lifestyle changes, herbal medicine, massage therapy and more. CAM services also reflect hospitals' desire to treat the whole person-body, mind and spirit."
